An executive assistant protects a leader's time and attention. The job spans calendar, inbox, meetings, travel, communication and projects, and the best EAs anticipate what's needed before they're asked.

Calendar: scheduling meetings, resolving conflicts, protecting focus time and planning around time zones. Inbox: sorting incoming mail, answering routine messages, drafting replies and making sure nothing important waits.
Meetings: preparing agendas and briefing notes, taking minutes and following up on actions. Travel: booking flights, hotels and transport, building itineraries and rearranging plans when things change. Communication: acting as the first point of contact for the executive and representing them professionally.
What separates a strong executive assistant is judgement: knowing which emails need the executive today, which meeting can move, and which request can be politely declined. EAs handle confidential information about people, deals and finances, so discretion is part of the job description, not a bonus.
When hiring, test judgement directly: give candidates a sample inbox or a clashing calendar and ask how they'd handle it.
The responsibilities are the same. A virtual executive assistant works remotely, using delegated access to your email and calendar, video calls and shared documents. For most executives, the only tasks that need someone on site are physical ones, and those can usually be arranged remotely.

Managing the calendar and inbox, preparing for meetings, handling travel, communicating with stakeholders and supporting projects.

An EA sees confidential information and often decides what reaches the executive, so trust and good judgement are central to the role.
Most of it can. Calendar, inbox, travel, documents and meeting prep are routinely handled by virtual executive assistants.
